Life by the Sea

Where do you explore the most?

I’m probably more of a coast girl, but my boyfriend loves the moors and forests, so it’s a bit of a balance of the two! A South Hams sunset is my go-to for post-work adventures, but I enjoy a further afield explore at the weekend. I grew up in Plymouth, before moving away for several years, and even after four years back I’m still always amazed at how many beautiful places there are to discover. Nothing beats the thrill of finding a new hidden gem and all this area has to offer: a hidden beach, a forest at dawn, dramatic coastline with seals playing, bluebells creeping over the moors, (and a cosy pub fire in the winter).

What is your favourite outdoor activity?

Walking might sound like the boring answer – although hopefully not - but honestly there is no greater joy than wandering the coastline and stumbling across, then clambering down to, a quiet cove and grounding yourself with the sound of the waves and sand on your feet. I believe in the health benefits of wild swimming, and completed the Polar Bear challenge to swim throughout the winter this year; it helps me feel connected, calm and complete. If I can be greedy and add an extra activity, I also love photography (so regularly have a camera around my neck) and the way it enables you to capture the beauty that you can see in nature and share it with other people.

What inspires you to protect the environment?

Protecting the environment is about more than just survival for us and the billions of species we share this world with. In my day job as a psychologist, I also know how important connection to nature can be for mental well-being; it can help to reduce anxiety and can offer us a reset, calm and focus. Protecting the environment does not just mean protecting all the magic of the natural world, but we’re also safeguarding a vital source of peace, resilience and healing for generations to come.
